Safety & Security
Councillor Leadman, in conjunction with the City, Police, outreach workers, community members and the province have been working together over the past two years to help ensure the well-being of residents in Kitchissippi Ward by keeping their streets and neighbourhoods safe.
She is a strong supporter of community associations actively working to reduce the incidences of crime in their neighbourhoods through such measures as neighbourhood watch.
A Safer Community
Councillor Leadman has worked closely with the local community association in Hintonburg, helping the association address and fix security issues that plagued the area. Over the past few years, through the dedication of the Hintonburg Community Association, residents have been slowly taking back their neighbourhoods. One of the best examples is that Assault Level 1 offences have declined to 19 in 2007, down from a seven year high in 2001 of 45. Due to its success, other communities in the ward and across the city are looking to it as a model to help take back their own neighbourhoods.
More information about the measures taken in Hintonburg is available on the association’s website at www.hintonburg.com/SC_start.html.
Fixing Problem Properties
Councillor Leadman is also working with Ottawa-Centre MPP Yasir Naqvi and fully supports Bill 106, the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act, 2008 (SCAN) that would allow officials to work with owners and landlords of problem properties to have the illegal activities stop before legal action is taken. It has proven to work well in other provinces. It will provide an alternative to the laws and regulations already in place.
More information about the bill and its progress is available at:http://yasirnaqvi.onmpp.ca/pages.aspx?id=scan.
